Hamlet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, and is one of his best-known and most-quoted plays. Evidence suggests that it was complete and being performed by 1600, but had some topical references added (which still survive) the following year.[1] Hamlet is probably the most popular of Shakespeare's plays, judging by the number of productions; for example, topping the list at the Royal Shakespeare since 1879. [2] The plot contains elements of revenge tragedy, fratricide, murder, existentialist self-questioning and supernatural intervention. With 4,042 lines and 29,551 words, Hamlet is the longest Shakespearean play.[3]

In January 2007, Time magazine placed Hamlet sixth in their list of The 10 Greatest Books of All Time.[4]

North is one of the four cardinal directions, specifically the direction that, in Western culture, is treated as the primary direction: north is used (explicitly or implicitly) to define all other directions; the (visual) top edges of maps usually correspond to the northern edge of the area represented, unless explicitly stated otherwise or landmarks are considered more useful for that territory than specific directions.
